چکیده

Analysis of data from the long term trash management trial at Mount Edgccombe (BTI) has shown that, after 59 ycars of green cane harvesting, with trash retention there was a significant incr-ease in soil organic matter content in thc surface 10 cm of soil compared with burning. The size of the microbial biomass, and its rcspiratory rate, dchytlrogenase activity and arginine ammonification rate were also increased by trash retention. Fertilised treatments tended to have a higher organic matter and rnicrobial biomass C content than unl'ertilised treatments, I-cflcct~ng the higher yields and greater organic matter returns under fertilisation. Soil microbial activity was however decreased by fertiliser applications. This inhibitory effect was attributed to fertiliser N-induced soil acidification.

The Effects of Cane Trash on Yield and Nutrition from the Long-term Field Trial at Mount Edgecombe

This paper reports on the yield and nutritional trends over 61 years as affected by various treatments (trashed, burnt with tops either left or removed and all plots either fertilised or not fertilised) of the burning and trashing trial (BT1) at Mount Edgecombe. The overall mean residual yield benefit due to trashing was 9.3 tc/ha/an after 39 crops. The capacity of the Arcadia soil form (Vertis...

Composition of the Soil Microbial Community under Sugarcane Production as Indicated by Phospholipid Fatty Acid Analysis

Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis was used to characterise the microbial communities in the soil under long-term pre-harvest burning of sugarcane and several other land uses, and on a long-term experiment comparing sugarcane burnt before harvest and sugarcane harvested green with retention of a trash blanket. Trends in total PLFAs (total microbial biomass) followed the order: kikuyu pastu...

Implications of organic management on yield, tuber quality and soil health in yams in the humid tropics

Global consciousness of food safety, health and environmental issues has stimulated interest in alternative agricultural systems like organic farming. Since information on organic farming of tuber crops is meagre, a field experiment was conducted in split plot design over a five-year period at Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, India. The aims were to evaluate the impact of organic, c...

Elemental Composition of PM2.5 in Araraquara City (Southeast Brazil) during Seasons with and without Sugar Cane Burning

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter below 2.5 μm (PM2.5), present in polluted air, has been associated with a large spectrum of health impairments, mainly because of its deep deposition into the lungs. Araraquara City (Southeast Brazil) is surrounded by sugar-cane plantations, which are burned to facilitate the harvesting; this process causes environmental pollution due to the large...

Stop - Huletts " Stalk Only Please

The results obtained from 17 030 samples of cane taken by grab samplers at five Huletts mills during the 1975176 season were analysed for extraneous matter. They indicate a mean of approximately 10 0/, on gross cane. The benefits of a reduction to 7 % are estimated and a proposed programme to achieve this target is outlined. Introduction Oliver Lyle in one of his entertaining and highly informa...
